I am here to order another Orange X juicer for my father. I have had one for myself for five years. While all of the complaints I have read about are true to some degree I feel they are grossly overstated. I find mine easy to clean (much more so than any electric I have had). The tilting I hardly notice (would not have thought of except for these reviews so it can't be that bad). My biggest complaint would be the device locking up after pressing the fruit. It's not that bad just frustrating when I'm in a hurry. I just have to wiggle the handle around until it frees up. All in all I find it's speed both in juicing and clean up a big plus for someone on the go (I keep mine on the counter, use it daily and have occasionally juiced a gallon at a time) and no problems with durability. Four stars because it is not perfect but it is very good and the best manual juicer out there.
P.S. When I was in construction we joked about someone needing to initiate their new hammer by smacking themselves really good with it. This almost always occurred as a result of the person not being used to the feel of the new hammer. It just took a while for them to adjust to the difference. It is my opinion that is all that is required for you to enjoy your Orange X. You just have to practice with it for a while before you get the hang of it. Then you'll be juicing like pro.
Not only do I own this juicer, but for four years, I sold it, so I feel quite qualified to write this review.
For a small, manual juicer, this is a heavy item (cast iron). It's very easy to clean; anyone who disagrees has obviously never used an electric juicer with sharp, complex or electric moving parts (this juicer has none of those things). It's a simple machine with only three removable pieces: the strainer, the juice funnel and the hard resin base that the juice receptacle (your glass) sits on. It does have suction cups that hold it in place, but it definitely sticks better to some surfaces than others (sticks best to granite or manufactured quartz, pretty well on laminate, not so well on wood countertops). The lever operates easily, and once you have the handle pressed completely down--it's not much of a struggle--it will extract juice to the point of the fruit being almost wrung dry. It works on citrus fruits as small as key limes and as large as grapefruits.
Worth noting: when pressing down on the extraction handle, I always put my other hand on top of the juicer, for stability, just in case (I have formica countertops). Also, you can't use a really tall glass; there's about a 6 inch clearance between the base and the spout. Overall, I enjoy this juicer and use it more often than my Breville Extractor, which, while fabulous, is a hateful machine to clean.
I've owned this product since 2001 and its done some serious duty. It is true, what others have noticed, that the assymetric design of this product isn't optimal. But I've processed 25 lb bags of valenicas in CA many times, so it is truly possible to develop the requisite skills.
After time the white coating on the cast iron did come off and some rust formed. This doesn't seem to be growing problem just a slight aesthetic issue.
My chief complaint would be the plastic insert at the top (underside) of the unit. The teeth holding this to the cast iron eventually succumbed under use and now doesn't stay in place definitely. If you know juicing is for you and a low profile (easier to store unit) isn't necessary, go with the commericial versions. They will probably last longer without this plastic issue.
I've had this juicer for many years. It sits on my counter and I use it daily. I've not had any problems with the suction cups slipping nor any difficulty extracting juice. The handle operates with ease and it is easy to clean. I was very surprised to see all the negative reviews in light of my experience/satisfaction.
My Sister and I bought this juicer from a store in town. It was adorable, seemed sturdy, and looked like it would work well for the box of oranges my dad sent for Christmas.
Well, Christmas morning we started juicing and were sorely disappointed in the little guy's performance. It wobbled on the counter top - the four squishy suction cups were insufficient support for the downward force required to squeeze the orange. Even with pressure on the back-side of the juicer, a cup placed for collection is in danger of toppling over with the machine. To add insult to injury, the squished orange half created a vacuum between the cone, the inside of the orange, and the top of the juicer. We had to haul upwards on the handle to get it to release - a difficult action the machine was not designed for. After about five oranges, it was stuck so tight that we gave up and let it sit the rest of Christmas Day.
Today, we took the juicer back to the store and ordered a Hamilton Beach juicer from Amazon... a model that has been in my father's house since my infancy.
I have never reviewed a product before, but I don't want anyone else to be suckered by this little sucker!
